History of Rishikesh
Mythologically, it is believed that Rishi Raibhya did atonement here and God appeared to name the place Hrishikesh and thus the place came to be known as Rishikesh. It is also said that Lord Rama after killing Ravana, did atonement here and his Younger brother Lakshman crossed river Ganga flowing through Rishikesh. The point at which he crossed the river, present "Lakshman Jhula" stands today. This bridge was made by using Jute rope in the starting.
