Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand is situated in the Garhwal region. This city of Uttarakhand is situated at an height of about 450 metres (1,480 ft) above from the sea level. Meaning of word "Dehradun"
The name "Dehradun" is made up of two words Dehra and Dun. The word Dehra is derived from the word "Dera" which means camp and the word "Doon" means a valley. Dehradun is the city which lies between Himalayas and the Shivaliks. A long time ago, Ram Rai (son of Sikh Guru Hari Rai) came to Dehradun valley along with his followers and established a camp in this valley to stay. This incident occurs when the modern Dehradun started to develop and was the time when Dehra was linked to Doon and thus the state capital was named as Dehradun.
History off Dehradun
It is said that after the battle between Ravan and Lord Rama, Laxman visited this valley. Dronacharya, royal guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas born here and also resided in Dehradun. So we can say that the history of the city Dehradun linked to the story of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Robber's cave is the famous tourist attraction and is about 8kms from Dehradun. This cave of Dehradun is a natural picnic spot. In this picnic spot, water suddenly disappears only to reappear in the form of a stream after a few yards. Malsi Deer Park

Laxman Siddh temple

Asan Barrage was created in 1967 and is popularly known as Dhalipur lake. This resort is situated at a distance of 43 kms from Dehradun on Chandigarh - Shimla highway.
